Josh Koenig, Head Baseball Coach
Josh Koenig is excited about the baseball program at Rainy River Community College! The 2016 season marked the best year for Rainy River Community College as they won the most games in program history with 27! This continual effort helped to recognize the Voyageur baseball program as competitive program in the MCAC Northern Division and one of the best Community College programs in Minnesota.
The overall record for the team in 2016 was 27-20 overall placing them 2nd in the Northern Division of the MCAC with a conference record of 7-3. Rainy River defeated Vermilion in the MCAC playoff mini-series and qualified for the NJCAA Region XIII tournament for the 2nd time in 3 years. At the NJCAA Region XIII tournament, the Voyageurs knocked of Riverland CC (#9 in Nation) and St. Cloud Tech (#6 in Nation) before losing a close game to Century College (#1 in Nation) and St. Cloud Tech. Rainy River finished 2nd in the State and 3rd in Region XIII!
The successes and the growth of the program continues! Jaymon Cervantes (So. RHP, Tucson, AZ) and Andrew Black (Fr. SS, Tucson, AZ) who were both named to the MCAC All-Division team. Black was also named to the NJCAA Region XIII: All-Region Team. The Voyageurs also shined academically with 7 players (Will Aesoph, Kris Barber, Lloyd Bernatz, Jerry Hernandez, J.D. Knutson, Ben Minter and Kijana Upshaw) named to the All-Academic team!
Coach Koenig is entering his 8th year as Head Coach of the Voyageurs in as many seasons. In 2013, he was named the MCAC Northern Division Coach of the Year! Coach Koenig works at Falls High School where he currently teaches physical education, health, and adaptive physical education. Previously, he was the athletic director and coached basketball and baseball. As the boys’ basketball coach he directed a tremendous turnaround with a record of 65-44 in the past 4 years, to include a record setting 23 wins in 2006-2007. In baseball, Koenig was an assistant coach working with pitchers and catchers in 2008 and 2009. While a part of this program, they won the Arrowhead Conference Championship in 2008 and had a team ERA of 2.97 and a team ERA of 2.38 in 2009.
In baseball, he has been involved at various levels to include Little League, VFW, various high schools, amateur baseball and college as a graduate assistant at the University of Minnesota highlighted by a 2002 Big Ten Championship. Koenig is also very involved as an official for basketball and baseball. In 2009, he umpired the Little League Central Region Tournament in Indianapolis, IN and was selected to work behind the plate for the Great Lakes Region Finals which was televised on ESPN. He umpired in 2011 at the Junior League Central Region Tournament in Ft. Wayne, IN and was again selected to work behind the plate for the Central Region Finals. He was selected to umpire in August at the 2014 Senior League Central Region Tournament in Peru, IL where he was selected to work the plate for the championship game. This past year he was honored and selected to work the Junior League World Series in Taylor, MI and worked in the World Series Championship game!
Coach Koenig enjoys spending time with his family as well as boating, hunting, fishing, and golf. He and his wife Shelly reside in International Falls with their children Garrett, Bryant, and Alyana.
