Rainy River Community College (RRCC) congratulates Athletic Director, Head Volleyball Coach and Health Instructor, Mel Millerbernd on the announcement of her retirement. Mel has been coaching Voyageur Women’s Volleyball since 1989 and was named Minnesota Community College Coach of the Year in 1996, 2001, 2002, and 2004. In 2002, Coach Millerbernd was also named Region 13B and District D Coach of the Year. Coach Millerbernd has had the honor of being the first woman in the state to play and coach in a State High School Basketball Tournament. In 2014, Mel was inducted into her high school’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

Coach Millerbernd’s last time coaching a volleyball game at RRCC will be Monday, October 18, 2021. Mel said, “I want to thank RRCC for hiring me back in the fall of 1989 and giving me the opportunity to coach volleyball for 33 years. It has been an honor. I would like to thank a few of my mentors: Sue Collins, George Schlieff, and Dave Horner. I’d also like to thank our current coaches – Bill Engel, Dieter Humbert, and Josh Koenig – it has been a pleasure working with all of you. Keep doing the good work that you do! I would also like to thank my family – Tom, Andrea, Kelly and Brooke. I appreciate the support you have given me throughout the years. I spent a lot of time in the gym and on the road – without your encouragement and support, I couldn’t have done it. Thank you!”

The RRCC community appreciates and values Mel’s commitment to serving RRCC students for several decades. Her leadership and compassion will be greatly missed. RRCC Interim Dean of Academics, Jessalyn Sabin, said, “Mel has been a key connector for students looking to further their education and also pursue their athletic passions. Mel has been a role model for her student athletes, and we will miss having her on the Rainy River campus!”
